What Does the Future Hold For Egypt's First Electric Car?

Following the news that El Nasr Automotive’s 2021 MoU with China’s Dongfeng Motor Co. to build electric vehicles expired without getting renewed, it wasn’t clear what the future holds for the Nasr E70. Would the fabled Egyptian electric car ever see the light of day?

According to Public Enterprise Minister Hisham Tawfik, Nasr Automotive is going ahead as planned - just not with Dongfeng Motor Co. The automotive company has been in contact with three potential companies to partner up with the project, which will see EGP 2 billion in investments.

Production for the model is set to begin in 2023, with output increasing to an annual 20,000 units over three years. Nasr Automotive is also going to offer private sector companies a 40% stake in the establishment of pay-to-use charging stations, with 10% taken by Nasr, and the remaining half by the state.
