World’s Largest Solar & Battery Storage Project Launches in Abu Dhabi

The world’s largest integrated solar and battery storage project has broken ground in Abu Dhabi, designed to deliver 1 gigawatt of baseload renewable power around the clock. The facility pairs 5.2 gigawatts of solar generation with 19 gigawatt hours of battery storage.

The project, developed by Masdar in partnership with the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), represents a total investment of around AED 22 billion (USD 6 billion). It marks a significant milestone in the UAE’s clean energy transition, advancing its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Spanning roughly 90 square kilometres in the Abu Dhabi desert, the development is expected to be operational by 2027. Its large-scale battery system will enable round-the-clock power generation by storing solar energy during the day and releasing it at night — a first-of-its-kind approach at this magnitude.
