airo Allocates Land for Stray Dog Shelter in Tebin

The Cairo Governorate has approved the allocation of a plot of land for the construction of a shelter dedicated to stray dogs. The move is part of broader efforts to improve animal welfare and manage the city’s stray dog population. Under the project, a 2.28-acre plot east of the Autostrad Road in Tebin will be developed to house, care for and rehabilitate stray dogs at Tebin and 15th of May City, with facilities aimed at ensuring proper shelter, treatment and oversight. Authorities said the shelter will help provide medical care and organised management of strays, reducing risks associated with unmanaged populations while enhancing public safety and hygiene. Local officials noted that the project aligns with ongoing initiatives to promote responsible animal care and create sustainable solutions for stray animals in urban areas. The development also reflects increasing engagement by governmental bodies on animal welfare issues. According to data from the General Authority for Veterinary Services, hospitals recorded more than 190,000 dog bite cases up to November 2025, a 25% increase compared to the previous year. Unofficial estimates suggest there are between 20 million and 30 million stray dogs nationwide, though no accurate count has been conducted.
