Inside Salih Najm al-Din Mausoleum on Al Moez Street

Found on Al Moez street, the historic Salih Najm Al Din Mausoleum is one of the most significant Ayyubid-era architectural structures.

Also known as Al Malik Al Saleh, Saleh Najm al-Din served as the Kurdish ruler of Egypt from 1240 to 1249, during the Ayyubid era. The mausoleum was built by Shajar al-Durr - the widow of Sultan Najm al-Din Ayyub - the same year he died, before she became the sultana of Egypt herself in 1250.

The mausoleum was also an educational institution known as Salhiyya Madrasa, and it was the first in history to teach all four schools of Islamic jurisprudence. Each school had its own allocated area inside the mausoleum.

One of the mausoleum’s most distinctive and enduring architectural elements is the main facade overlooking Al Moez street, along with a wooden cabin housing Ayyubi-era artefacts and a plaque near the entrance documenting Salih Najm El Din’s burial site.
