Egypt’s Demographic ‘Red Zones’ for Birth Rates Fall to 20 in 2025

The number of high-need demographic "red zones" in Egypt fell to 20 by the end of 2025, according to the eighth edition of the country's composite population indicators.

The figure marks a decline from 43 red zones recorded in the previous edition and 74 in the sixth edition, reflecting broader changes across population and development indicators.

The latest report also recorded annual births falling below two million for the first time in years, alongside an increase in the number of areas classified as yellow and green zones, categories associated with stronger development outcomes.

According to the Ministry of Health and Population, the number of governorates with no red zones rose to 13 by the end of 2025, compared to three governorates in the sixth edition of the indicators. The report also showed continued declines in fertility and birth rates.

Egypt's total fertility rate reached 2.34 children per woman in 2025, down from 2.54 in 2023. During the same period, the crude birth rate declined from 19.4 births per 1,000 people to 18.1 births per 1,000 people.

The figures were presented as part of the eighth edition of Egypt's composite population indicators, which track demographic and development trends across the country.

According to the Ministry of Health and Population, recent improvements have been linked to efforts to expand family planning and reproductive health services alongside awareness campaigns targeting population and development issues.

The ministry also highlighted positive fertility indicators in Port Said, Gharbia, Damietta, Dakahlia and Suez.
