Egypt Retains Emerging Market Status in S&P Dow Jones Indices
S&P Dow Jones Indices has decided against a proposed downgrade of Egypt to Frontier Market status.
Egypt will remain within S&P Dow Jones Indices’ Emerging Markets universe after the index provider decided against a proposed reclassification to Frontier Market status.
The decision means there will be no change to Egypt’s current classification across S&P Dow Jones Indices’ global equity benchmarks.
S&P Dow Jones Indices had opened a consultation in June on potentially moving Egypt from Emerging to Frontier status, citing market accessibility, economic performance and institutional stability among the factors under review. Had the proposal gone ahead, the change was expected to take effect during the September 2027 index reconstitution.
The latest outcome follows a similar decision from FTSE Russell, which retained Egypt’s Secondary Emerging Market classification in its own equity market review.
Together, the two decisions leave Egypt’s status unchanged across both major index providers, avoiding the potential consequences of a downgrade for benchmark-tracking funds and international investors.
