Grand Egyptian Museum Restricts Large Props to Protect Artefacts

The Grand Egyptian Museum has introduced restrictions on the entry of large replicas and objects that could endanger artefacts, as part of updated visitor guidelines.

According to tourism expert Walid El Batouty, the measure aligns with practices at major museums worldwide and is intended to protect collections rather than target specific cultural or religious symbols.

The policy allows museum security to assess items on-site, with restrictions applying to objects that could be used to touch or point at displays in ways that risk damage. Large replicas, including oversized models of the Key of Life, may be refused entry under these guidelines.

Smaller items, such as pendants and similar accessories, remain permitted and are also available through the museum’s official retail outlets. Tour guides are also subject to strict rules governing the use of sticks or markers during explanations inside exhibition spaces.

The clarification follows online discussions after a tour guide claimed he had been stopped from entering with a large prop. Officials reiterated that the policy is based on size and potential risk, with comparable rules applied in leading museums internationally.
