New AED 2 Billion Dubai Road Cuts Commute Times by Half
The AED 2 billion road project will reduce travel time between Umm Al Sheif Street and Emirates Road to 15 minutes.
Travel time between Umm Al Sheif Street and Emirates Road is expected to fall from 33 minutes to 15 minutes under the AED 2 billion Latifa bint Hamdan Corridor Development Project.
The Roads and Transport Authority has awarded the contract for the 12 kilometre corridor, which will connect Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Al Meydan Street, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street and Emirates Road. Completion is scheduled for the end of 2028.
The corridor is expected to accommodate more than 130,000 journeys a day and serve around 650,000 residents and visitors. It will include seven bridges spanning a combined 2,300 metres and eight tunnels extending 900 metres, with a total capacity of around 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
The project is designed to ease congestion on Al Khail Road, Dubai–Al Ain Road, Umm Suqeim Street and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road while adding approximately 12% to the capacity of the emirate’s east–west road network. It will also improve access between Nad Al Sheba, Al Barari, Dubai Hills, District One, Mohammed Bin Rashid Gardens, Living Legends, Majan and Global Village.
Works will expand Latifa bint Hamdan Street to four lanes in each direction and introduce free-flow interchanges, bridges and loop ramps. A new road will connect Al Khail Road with the street’s extension, while sections of Al Meydan Street and nearby interchanges will also be developed.
The plans additionally include 12.5 kilometres of cycling tracks connecting with the existing network to create a route between Al Qudra and Jumeirah.
