New System to Regulate Horse & Camel Rides at Giza Pyramids

An integrated system to regulate horse and camel ride services at the Giza Pyramids is being introduced under a protocol between the Supreme Council of Antiquities and Orascom Pyramids for Projects, as part of wider efforts to improve the visitor experience at the archaeological site.

The initiative is intended to raise service standards, better organise ride operators and strengthen the health and welfare of working animals through the application of humane treatment practices.

According to the plan, the Giza Governorate, the Tourism and Antiquities Police and other relevant authorities have organised the work of horse and camel owners while addressing practices that disrupted visitors, particularly around the entrances to the archaeological area and within the designated riding zone. Officials said legal action is being taken against violators, stressing that the reforms are designed to regulate and develop the activity rather than eliminate it, while protecting the livelihoods of those who depend on it.

The programme also includes expanded veterinary care. Orascom Pyramids for Leisure Projects is working with the Brooke animal welfare charity and the Giza Veterinary Directorate to provide regular health checks, treatment and veterinary services for working animals, alongside the installation of water troughs at gathering points to ensure continuous access to clean drinking water.

Brooke will also continue supporting animal shelters outside the archaeological zone through ongoing health monitoring, treatment and improvements to housing and nutrition. The measures form part of a broader redevelopment programme aimed at ensuring horse and camel rides remain a well-managed feature of visits to the Giza Pyramids while improving service quality, visitor safety and animal welfare.
