Parents in Egypt Can Now Control What Their Kids Watch on Youtube

YouTube has launched supervised kid accounts in Egypt and across the Middle East and North Africa, introducing new parental controls designed for children who have outgrown the YouTube Kids app but still require supervised access to the platform.

Integrated into the main YouTube app, the feature allows parents to tailor their child's viewing experience by selecting from three content settings based on age and maturity.

The 'Explore' setting focuses on educational videos, tutorials, arts and crafts, while 'Explore More' expands access to include gaming content and live streams. The 'Most of YouTube' option opens access to almost the entire platform, excluding content that is age-restricted or intended for adults.

The update also introduces a dedicated daily timer for YouTube Shorts, allowing parents to limit how long children can spend scrolling through short-form videos or disable access to the feed altogether during periods such as exams.

Supervised accounts also come with a range of safety features enabled by default. These include disabling video uploads, public comments and autoplay, while personalised advertising is turned off to prevent commercial tracking of younger users.

Parents can set up and manage supervised accounts through YouTube's Family Center or via the Google Family Link app, giving them greater control over content access and screen time within a single account.

The rollout comes as online child safety continues to receive growing attention across the region, with platforms introducing additional tools aimed at helping families create age-appropriate digital experiences.
