Red Sea Initiative for Coral Reef Conservation Launched in Egypt

A new initiative focused on coastal sustainability and coral reef conservation has been launched in Egypt, alongside plans to establish a dedicated fund to support long-term environmental protection efforts in the Red Sea.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Local Development and Environment, the Egyptian Red Sea Initiative will support biodiversity conservation, improve the management of protected areas, strengthen coral reef monitoring programmes and expand the network of mooring buoys installed along the Red Sea coastline.

The launch also introduced plans for the Egyptian Fund for Coral Reefs, which is intended to attract long-term investment and provide sustainable financing for conservation and management activities.

The ministry said the initiative, which is entirely Egyptian, seeks to balance economic development and investment with environmental commitments while safeguarding the livelihoods of communities that depend on the Red Sea and its tourism sector.

Community participation is also a key component of the programme, with plans to integrate local residents into conservation activities and promote community-based ecotourism. Implementation will take place through international partnerships in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme, with support from the Global Fund for Coral Reefs.

The initiative was first unveiled during the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Sharm El Sheikh in 2022, where the preservation and restoration of Red Sea coral reefs featured prominently on the agenda. According to the ministry, the Red Sea's coral reefs support diverse marine ecosystems and underpin a significant tourism industry.

Existing protection measures already include the installation of mooring buoys aimed at preventing vessels from anchoring in sensitive areas. The United States Agency for International Development has pledged an initial USD 15 million to support the initiative.
