Saudi FA President Resigns After World Cup Group Stage Exit
Yasser Al Mishal stepped down after Saudi Arabia finished bottom of Group H.
Yasser Al Mishal has resigned as president of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation following Saudi Arabia's exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the group stage.
His resignation comes before the end of the federation's current electoral cycle after Saudi Arabia finished bottom of Group H with two points, failing to progress to the knockout rounds.
In a statement posted on X, Al Mishal said he was stepping down after serving seven years as president, adding that he accepted full responsibility for the team's failure to reach the next stage of the tournament.
He also thanked the Saudi leadership for its support of football and expressed his appreciation to the Minister of Sport, stating that he would not remain in the role until the end of the current term.
According to Al Mishal, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation will begin procedures to open nominations for a new board in accordance with its regulations. He added that he would continue serving the country and supporting Saudi sport in other capacities.
