Cairo According to: Yasmina El-Abd

Remember her performance at the Grand Egyptian Museum? We do too. This is Cairo According to: Yasmina El-Abd.

Cairo According to: Yasmina El-Abd

When CairoScene featured Yasmina El-Abd on the 2025 Impact List, it was for “sweeping Egyptian audiences off their feet.” On and off screen, Yasmina has become a face, and a voice, of her generation.

A UN Goodwill Ambassador, the 19-year-old actress and singer has, over the past year, emerged as a role model for many young Egyptians.

From taking centre stage at the opening ceremony of the Grand Egyptian Museum to the characters she plays on screen, often navigating intense inner pressure and transformation, Yasmina’s ability to rise to the occasion is part of what makes her the rising star she is today.

Here, she shares her favourite Maadi rooftop, the breakup song that feels like Cairo to her, and the independent cinema where she’s seen some of her favourite films.

A place that means Cairo to me:

The Grand Egyptian Museum for sure. What an incredible way to connect to your roots!

There’s always going to be something new to learn and to explore. We’re truly blessed as a people to have such a rich history and culture that we have the privilege of using as a point of reference, inspiration, and to just gaze at and read about for hours.

Obviously, being a part of the opening ceremony takes 1st place ;)Complete the following: Cairo is…

Unapologetically itself.What's your neighbourhood like?

I live in a neighbourhood that’s a mix between chill and restless lol. I love my neighbourhood. It’s where our family has lived since before we moved indefinitely. If I had it my way, I’d never leave it.

Your go-to food spot?

Estro! I’ve been going almost every week since I was 14. The team has become family. Such a beautiful Sicilian menu on an even more beautiful rooftop in the middle of Maadi. On a clear day you can even see the Pyramids from whichever table you’re sitting at!

I’m also a huuuuge REIF lover. I also go every week. It’s an addiction.

For Egyptian food, Khufu’s is forever unmatched. Number 1 in the Middle East & North Africa for a reason! Your go-to café or bar?

Genco in Maadi. Any cafe in Maadi for that matter lol.

What isn’t a Cairo landmark but should be?

West El Balad.

Soooo many incredible hidden gems. Always something new to do. To be honest, Cairo is all about finding those hidden gems. To newcomers it can be really daunting, but Egypt is full of surprises and it’s all about digging into what the city can offer. West El Balad is also home to Zawya, which is one of my favourite, lowkey spots to watch really cool films that I wouldn’t be able to find anywhere else.  Tell us a song that feels like Cairo.

Donia Wael’s ‘Mafish’.

I know it’s supposed to be a melancholic break up song, but in this context there’s something that feels like home. Especially the chorus. I also love Donia and everything she makes is beautiful!!!!!  What about a film that feels like Cairo?

Has to be ‘El Sett’. What's a place in Cairo you wish you could revisit for the first time?

The Citadel of Saladin. Such a beautiful gem in Cairo.
