Egyptian Label Nagskin Says 'Don't Underestimate the Belt'
Egyptian designer Noha Tarek built Nagskin from a lifelong obsession with belts, turning her travel finds into timeless pieces worn by Cairo’s celebrities.
Egyptian luxury belt brand Nagskin was born in a mother’s closet. Like many young designers, Noha Tarek played dress-up in her mother’s wardrobe as a child. And the belts are what caught her eye, vintage buckles molded from heavy silver that could make or break an outfit with the help of a smooth leather strap.
“People underestimate the belt and treat it as an afterthought. But it’s the centerpiece, like a piece of jewellery,” Noha said. “You start with a belt and the rest of the outfit comes together."
“A belt can completely transform your posture, your outfits, your silhouette and your attitude."
Noha’s belt obsession as a child wasn’t just confined to her mother’s closet. Since she was young, she has been collecting handcrafted belt buckles from her travels to Italy, Portugal, China and Taiwan.
“I had around four thousand belt buckles by the time I decided to start Nagskin,” Noha said about the massive collection that supplied the brand. “I just needed to source the leather.”
After working in the fashion world for about a decade in styling and art direction, Nagskin came to life in the fall of 2025.
“I reached a point where creating for others was no longer enough,” Noha said. “I wanted to build something that carries my own vision.”
Noha had been dreaming of starting her own brand for years. She first tested the waters when she was working as the creative director for Egyptian footwear brand Zee, where she launched her first belt collection. The entire line sold out on the website in just two days, without any marketing.
That was the encouragement Noha needed to venture out on her own. She still likes to keep marketing low-key. Noha builds the Nagskin brand name through word of mouth and subtle appearances on celebrities’ waists, like singer Ziad Zaza and actor Ahmed Malek.
“I don’t feel the pressure to do any marketing. Since they’re all timeless pieces, they're going to sell out eventually,” she said.
Nagskin has 14 timeless pieces, to be exact. And many of the belts are named after her friends and family members.
“Drawing from the stories of the people I love inspires me the most. When designing, I picture them in front of me,” Noha said. You can often find her wearing the ‘Zala’ belt, named for a close friend from school. “I asked myself, what would Zala wear? What’s Zala’s personality?”
Zala loves horses, so Noha created the buckle as a horseshoe and scratched the leather belt raw like the texture of Zala’s clothes after she falls off the horse.
Being a fashion designer requires having an eye for detail. Noha also looks to the architecture and contrasts of Cairo, and its surroundings, for design inspiration.
“I’ve been inspired by the chaos of Cairo streets and the calmness of the countryside. Like the colorful doors of Faiyoum decorated with stones and the doorknobs of Zamalek,” Noha said. “And the fashion in places like Siwa, Faiyoum, and Wadi Lahami.”
And if we learned one thing from Nagskin, it is that the belt is an essential detail one cannot miss.
“The belt grows with you," Noha said. "The longer you wear it, the more beautiful it will become.”
