The new tri-weekly flights offer travellers an affordable way to connect with thishistoric Silk Road oasis.
Emirati budget carrier Wizz Air is launching new flights from Abu Dhabi and Turkistan, a historic destination in southern Kazakhstan, three times weekly starting January 2024.
Located in southern Kazakhstan, Turkistan was once coveted by Alexander the Great and Ghenghis Khan for its wealth and geographic centrality in Asia. Today, the city contains a wealth of historic and cultural sites that highlights its place as a crossroads between the continents of the world.
“Turkistan will become an important destination due to its diverse features and spiritual values,” Hamdi Güvenç of partner YDA Group tells SceneTraveller. “The fact that it is the spiritual capital of the Turkic world further increases its importance.”
Amongst the region’s most important sites are the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yassawi, a sky-blue mosaic covered sanctuary honouring one of the Turkic world’s most prominent poet-philosophers, as well as the Azret Sultan Museum, an immense archive of Kazakhstan’s national history.
Fares between Abu Dhabi and Turkistan start from just 159 AED each way.
