Egyptian Museum Displays Musical Artefacts for World Music Day
Downtown Cairo’s Egyptian Museum is hosting a special collection of musical artefacts for World Music Day, including depictions of performances, statues of musicians, and drum covers.
In celebration of World Music Day on June 21st, Downtown Cairo’s Egyptian Museum is hosting a special collection of artefacts dedicated to the history of music in ancient Egypt.
The collection will feature ancient instruments, depictions of performances, statues of musicians, and drum covers made from wood, bronze, and ivory from Saqqara, Abydos, Luxor, and San al-Hajar.
Music was central to ancient Egyptian life, having found its place at the centre of their celebrations, feasts, and religious proceedings. The goddess Hathor, one of the most popular deities who presided over everyday life, was called ‘The Lady of Music’ - a sign of music’s importance to the ancient Egyptians.
