The Egyptian government is digging a 174 km artificial river in the Western desert. The river will be used to irrigate and sustain the New Delta project, one of the country’s most ambitious agricultural undertakings, which aims to reclaim and nurture 2.2 million feddans of farmland.
The government has also been constructing 30 water lifting stations, and developing Al-Hammam Plant, a huge wastewater treatment project. This plant can treat 7.5 million cubic metres of wastewater per day.
The man-made river, lifting stations, and treatment plant have cost EGP 60 billion. The government is also working to establish the National Water Resources Plan 2037, which looks to ration and maximise Egypt’s water use.
