Water From World’s Purest Lake in Russia Will Soon Come to Egypt
You might just be drinking water from Siberian lakes soon…
In an attempt to circumvent potential absolute water scarcity - partially caused by the adverse effects of climate change - Egypt is getting ready to receive water from the world's deepest and purest lake, Baikal, in Siberia, Russia.
1,500 metres deep, the water will be extracted via pipes 400 metres beneath the lake's surface and then swiftly placed in special tanks to maintain its purity. Whilst 97% of Egypt’s current water supply comes from the Nile river, this newly-added source also enables the country to forge economic relations with countries abroad as well as export water to its North African neighbours and across the region. In addition to addressing local water challenges, this move coincides with the United Nations’ sustainable development goals that emphasise the need for cooperation between various nations around the world in the charge against water scarcity. Once the plan is fully actualised, the water will be available in upscale stores and locations throughout Egypt.
