Badeela - September 2023
Our monthly editorial playlist bringing you our picks of MENA and Arabic alternative music from September 2023
Badeela is SceneNoise’s monthly alternative MENA music playlist, bringing you our favourite feel good tunes and cathartic alt-rock gems released in September.
This month, popular Egyptian band Massar Egbari released their track ‘Asef’, where they combine smooth guitar riffs with expressive horns for a colourful single. Meanwhile, alt-pop singer-songwriter Idreesi released the latest in his string of collaborations with producer Ahmed Diaa with the track ‘Zymal Ketab By2ol’, where you can hear the Jordanian artist settling into his brand-new sound, which draws from genres like 90s Arabic pop and indie-rock.
Egyptian alt-pop band Sharmoofers’s latest release, ‘Sha2lebty Routiny’, can also be found on this edition of Badeela. The song’s contemplative lyrics and instrumentation are brightened with vivid arrangement ideas and quirky vocal flows.
‘Moonshine II’ by Egyptian experimentalist Maurice Louca’s project, Maurice Louca & Elephantine, is also featured in this month’s selection, where a playful yet intricate arrangement of mallets, woodwinds, and horns falls in and out of harmony. Melodies start to drift until they spiral out of control, eventually realigning to form the same thoughtful phrases they had diverged from.
