Photo of the Week: Alisha Khan
Photographer Alisha Khan captures two strangers sharing tea in Al Balad, finding memory and meaning in an ordinary moment.
Jeddah-based photographer and filmmaker Alisha Khan thrives on documenting the everyday moments that often pass unnoticed. Guided by a belief that stories don't always need to be constructed, her work is rooted in observation, capturing ordinary encounters as they unfold and inviting viewers to find meaning within them. As she puts it, “I like to let moments speak for themselves. I’m just there to notice them.”
For this edition of Photo of the Week, Khan selected an image captured in Al Balad during an ordinary walk with a friend. The photograph shows two elderly men sharing tea and conversation, a fleeting moment left entirely untouched by the camera. “Sometimes the most powerful images are the ones that don’t try to be anything,” she says.
For Khan, the image also serves as a quiet portrait of Jeddah itself. She was drawn to its simplicity and rawness, wondering how long the two men had lived in Saudi Arabia, how much they had witnessed the city change, and why they continued to return to the same small corner of Al Balad. When she spoke to them, they told her it felt "just like the old times".
