6,500 KM Walkway Project to Transform Dubai Into a Pedestrian City
The network includes 112 KM of waterfront paths, 124 KM of green trails and 150 KM of rural and mountain routes for pedestrians.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid has announced the launch of the Dubai Walk Master Plan, a 6,500 KM pedestrian network designed to transform the emirate into a year-round pedestrian-friendly city by enhancing urban mobility and quality of life, while promoting healthier lifestyles.
The plan includes building 3,300 KM of new walkways and upgrading 2,300 KM of existing paths by 2040, with an additional 900 KM planned beyond that. It features 112 KM of waterfront paths, 124 KM of green trails, and 150 KM of rural and mountain routes. Connectivity will be improved with 110 pedestrian bridges and tunnels, with the hope of boosting pedestrian mobility from the current 13% to 25% by 2040.
Two signature routes will be developed: the 15 KM Al Ras Historical Route, linking cultural landmarks, and the 2 KM elevated Future Loop near the Museum of the Future, featuring a climate-controlled walking zone.
The project supports Dubai’s 2040 Urban Master Plan, including creating a ‘20-minute city,’ where 80% of daily needs are accessible by foot or bicycle. The first phase runs from 2025 to 2027, with completion set for 2040.
