AI-Powered Smart Traffic Lights to Ease Congestion in Abu Dhabi
This initiative is part of a larger smart infrastructure programme aimed at building a safer, more efficient, and sustainable mobility system for the capital.

Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), under the Department of Municipalities and Transport, has launched an AI-powered smart traffic light system to improve traffic flow and road safety across the capital.
Known as “Ramp Metering,” the system is being deployed at seven major entry points to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street, positioning Abu Dhabi among the first cities worldwide to adopt this advanced traffic management technology.
Using real-time sensors and AI-enabled cameras, the system monitors vehicle density and dynamically adjusts signal timings. During peak hours, entry onto the road is regulated to prevent bottlenecks, while lighter traffic conditions allow for a smoother flow. The adaptive system is expected to enhance network efficiency, cut travel times, and support safer driving conditions.
The rollout’s first phase includes Shakhbout bin Sultan Street, Dhafeer Street, Hadbat Al Ghubainah Street (outbound), and Salama bint Butti Street, Al Dhafra Street, Rabdan Street, and the Umm Yifina Street exit (inbound).
