An Emirati Graduate’s Musical Composition Will Be Broadcast in Space

This September, Emirati graduate Nadine Kabbani’s composition ‘No Gravity’ will be broadcast from the International Space Station.

A SpaceX rocket will carry her winning submission - a celestial-inspired composition - to the orbiting laboratory, where it will be played for the astronauts. The piece merges classical instruments with synthesisers, and is themed after the feeling of floating unanchored between places and longing for home.

The 20-year-old was selected as one of two winners of the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology’s ‘AstroBeat: Music From Space’ competition in May. Kabbani recently graduated from the New York University Abu Dhabi, with a Bachelor’s degree in Legal Studies and Music.

The other winner is American student Summer Reid, whose composition ‘Little Brooks’ was inspired by a family reunion.
