Aswan & Nubian Museums to Undergo Major Restoration
The Supreme Council of Antiquities is revamping Aswan and Nuian Museums, restoring historic structures and updating exhibitions.

The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has launched an extensive restoration and exhibition development project at Aswan Museum and Nubian Museum, led by the Supreme Council of Antiquities.
The Aswan Museum will undergo structural rehabilitation, security upgrades, and a revamped display scenario highlighting Aswan's ancient history and military life from pre-dynastic times through the Islamic era.
At the Nubian Museum, the exhibition will be updated to feature artefacts from Aswan’s storerooms, complemented by modernised lighting and climate control. Enhancements will also extend to the museum’s outdoor spaces, where visitor amenities such as bazaars and cafeterias, characteristics of Nubian heritage.
Further enhancements include a wooden marina for boat arrivals at Philae Island, improved visitor services, and upgraded public areas at both museums. Officials have stressed the priority of completing these projects in alignment with their historical and cultural significance.
The Nubian Museum, which opened in 1997 with UNESCO’s backing, preserves artefacts from Nubian temple excavations and showcases the region’s customs and language. The Aswan Museum, originally built in 1898 and converted into a museum in 1917, has remained mostly closed since 2010, with only its annex reopening in 2017.
