Cairo Governor: EGP 127 Million Raised for Historic Cairo Revamp
Special governorate account collects EGP 127 million to support Downtown and Historic Cairo upgrades.
Donations totalling EGP 127 million have been paid into a special Cairo Governorate account set up to support the development of Historic Cairo and Downtown.
Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber disclosed the figure during the Fifth Republic Conference 2026, stating that the account was established to receive contributions aimed at reviving central Cairo’s urban and historic character while preserving its architectural identity.
Saber said the governorate is coordinating with relevant authorities on visual identity upgrades and improvement works across the area, as part of broader efforts to restore Downtown’s built heritage and enhance its public realm.
Reviewing developments over the past 12 years, Saber pointed to Cairo’s demographic and service pressures, noting that the capital is home to around 11 million residents and receives nearly 11 million daily commuters.
He said projects have focused on upgrading services, addressing infrastructure challenges, executing redevelopment schemes and preparing future plans under a vision to position Cairo as a capital for tourism and the arts, as well as a scientific hub, while safeguarding its historical and cultural fabric.
On housing and urban planning, Saber described population growth and informal settlements as key challenges. He said residents from 112 informal areas had been relocated to alternative neighbourhoods equipped with services as part of a comprehensive redevelopment strategy.
Work is continuing in several locations, including the Almaza area on Hussein Kamel Street, alongside efforts to revive Downtown with the support of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly. He also cited completed upgrades in formerly unplanned districts such as El Duwaiqa and the Ahmed Orabi Axis, which were redeveloped into serviced areas.
