Construction Begins on Aswan's First Organ Transplant Centre
The new surgical centre will reduce the number of patients needing to travel to larger cities for transplants.
Aswan’s first dedicated organ transplant centre has entered the initial stages of construction in New Aswan City, providing a substantial local hub in Upper Egypt for the complex procedures, particularly for kidney transplants, the most common type of transplant undertaken in Egypt.
For many in need of the often-life-saving procedure, local options in the south of the country are limited, forcing patients to travel long distances to major cities further north, such as Cairo and Alexandria. When completed, the new centre will reduce the need for major travel, which can be particularly difficult, dangerous, and expensive for those awaiting surgery.
In these very early stages of its implementation, no official expected date of opening for the centre has yet been announced.
