Egypt’s First Locally Manufactured Electric Vehicle to Launch in 2023
The government’s strategy for a greener future is on its way with AASTMT’s Electric Vehicles at the price of EGP 95K.
The Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport’s (AASTMT) is launching Egypt's first locally manufactured vehicle within the next six months. The electric vehicle is expected to be sold for EGP 95,000.
The AASTMT-funded project consists of two electric vehicles that have been designed in collaboration with the private sector.
According to Dean of Applied Research at AASTMT, Mohamed El-Ghamry, the first electric vehicle was already used at the COP27 UN Climate Change Conference in Sharm El Sheikh in November last year. The vehicle operates on a lithium-ion battery, and its cost is 30% of that of a diesel vehicle. It's an economy car that has an estimate of 12 years and a 10-year warranty.
The second EV, which is currently in the works, has a more spacious design suited for families of five, and runs at a speed of 60 km/hr. While 60% of the vehicle contains local components, that number is expected to rise to 100% within two years.
