Egypt’s Locally Assembled Smartphone Prices Rise 15% Following Customs
Prices of locally manufactured smartphones in Egypt have increased by 5–15% following the end of a customs exemption.
Prices of smartphones manufactured in Egypt have increased by an estimated 5% to 15% in recent weeks, according to the Mobile Phone Traders Division of the Giza Chamber of Commerce, with several locally assembled brands already adjusting their pricing.
The increases have affected multiple price segments, with Oppo and Honor among the brands that have implemented changes so far. Distributors expect further adjustments from other manufacturers, while retailers report that the price rises are taking place amid subdued demand in the local mobile phone market.
The recent changes follow the end of a customs exemption that previously allowed Egyptians returning from abroad to bring one mobile phone into the country for personal use without paying duties.
Under the updated rules, phones purchased overseas can now be used in Egypt for up to 90 days before customs fees become payable, a move that traders say has altered market dynamics and pricing behaviour.
At the same time, the government continues to promote domestic electronics manufacturing through the Egypt Makes Electronics initiative.
Around 10 million mobile phones were produced locally in 2025, with plans to raise output to 15 million units in 2026 as part of broader efforts to expand Egypt’s electronics manufacturing base.
