Egypt's Roads Ranked 18th Best Globally, Gaining 100 Places Since 2015

Egypt’s road network has retained 18th place on the Global Road Quality Index’s ranking for 2024 with an index value of 5.53, compared to 5.46 in 2021. The latest announcement of world road quality rankings confirms the top-20 position of Egypt’s extensive network of tarmac roads, marking a 100-place ranking jump since 2015, when it scored just 2.9 on the GRQI.

The significant uptick in the quality of Egypt’s roads comes thanks to the National Roads Project, which has been responsible for 6,300 km of newly built roads - out of a planned 7,000 km - at a cost of EGP 155 billion.

The project will increase the total length of major roads by 29.8% to 30,500 km by the end of 2024 - there were only 23,500 km of main roads in 2014. In correlation with the improvement in road quality, road deaths have decreased by 28.6% between 2016 and 2023.
