Egypt to Build Centralised High-Tech Storage Facility for Artefacts
This initiative forms the first phase of a wider plan to modernise the ministry’s storage network.
The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has announced the creation of a large-scale central storage facility for archaeological artefacts, designed to meet the highest technical standards and linked electronically to all other storage sites across the country. This initiative forms the first phase of a wider plan to modernise the ministry’s storage network.
The plan follows directives from President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and begins with a nationwide review of all existing warehouses. A committee chaired by the minister has been formed to assess conditions, determine which storage units need upgrading, and establish a set of model facilities built to international conservation and safety standards. The warehouse classification will consider the material of artefacts and their storage needs, and the ministry emphasises full compliance with occupational health and safety protocols for staff.
The review’s mandate covers the number of artefacts in each facility, required technical enhancements and a schedule for rollout of upgrades. The new central facility will act both as a reference hub and an electronic control node, allowing real-time tracking and management of Egypt’s archaeological collections.
