Egyptian Landmarks Go Dark Tonight for Earth Hour 2025

Tonight, March 22nd, six of Egypt’s most iconic historic sites—including Salah El-Din Citadel in Cairo, Qaitbay and Rosetta Forts in Alexandria, Luxor Temple, the Deir el-Bahari complex, and Qubbet el-Hawa in Aswan—will switch off their exterior lights for one hour at 8:30 PM in observance of Earth Hour 2025.

The global initiative, held under the theme ‘Together Towards the Biggest Earth Hour’, aims to promote energy conservation and climate awareness. Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy, emphasised that the country’s participation highlights the importance of sustainable practices to protect the environment for future generations.

Among the museums taking part are the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, the Royal Chariots Museum in Bulaq in Cairo, the Greco-Roman Museum and the Alexandria National museum, the Sohag National Museum, the Luxor Museum of Ancient Egyptian Art, The Nubian Museum in Aswan, Malawi in Minya, and at Sharm El Sheikh in South Sinai. By going dark for an hour, these cultural landmarks join millions worldwide in a symbolic act of environmental consciousness.
