Endangered Green Sea Turtle Rescued From Seafood Shop in Mansoura

An Environmental Affairs Agency team in Mansoura has rescued a green sea turtle, a species classified as globally endangered and protected by law, after it was discovered inside a seafood shop on January 23rd, 2026.

The intervention took place in the University District area of the city following a report from a local citizen. The operation was carried out in coordination with the Environment Administration in Dakahlia Governorate, West Mansoura District, the East Delta Region of the Environmental Affairs Agency, and the agency’s media, awareness and training departments.

Officials seized the turtle and initiated the necessary environmental and legal procedures, handling the animal in accordance with protocols approved by the Ministry of Environment. According to the Environmental Affairs Agency, arrangements were made to transfer the turtle to the Sea Turtle Rescue Centre at the Ashtum El Gamil Protectorate in Port Said.

The centre will conduct veterinary examinations and provide specialised care, with the stated aim of returning the turtle to its natural habitat once it is deemed fit for release. The agency said the green sea turtle is among the species facing global population decline and is afforded legal protection under Egyptian law.

It added that the case reflects the importance of public reporting and coordination between executive authorities in supporting wildlife conservation and environmental protection efforts.
