European Parliament Approves EUR 4 Billion Aid Tranche for Egypt

The European Parliament approved on Tuesday a €4 billion second tranche of a €7.4 billion macro-financial assistance package for Egypt.

The vote passed with 452 in favor, 182 against, and 40 abstentions. This follows the disbursement of a €1 billion initial tranche received by Egypt in January 2025.

The €5 billion in macro-financial assistance is part of a broader agreement signed on 17 March 2024 between Egypt and the European Union, which includes €5 billion in budget support, €1.8 billion in investment guarantees, and €600 million for technical assistance, training, and capacity building.

The European Commission proposed the package in light of Egypt’s economic and financial conditions and its regional role amid geopolitical tensions.

Egypt's foreign ministry welcomed the decision, describing it as a reflection of the strategic partnership signed in March 2024 and recognition of Egypt’s regional role and development efforts. The disbursement of the €4 billion tranche awaits final procedural steps within the EU, expected to be completed in the coming weeks.
