First Phase of Dubai’s Ambitious Ocean Reef Plan Begins

Dubai has officially launched the first phase of the groundbreaking Dubai Reef project, a monumental marine initiative aimed at bolstering biodiversity, enhancing food security, and positioning the emirate as a global leader in eco-tourism. Announced during COP28 and spearheaded by His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, this ambitious plan marks a pivotal step in the UAE's journey toward environmental sustainability.

The Dubai Reef initiative, first conceptualized in May 2023, represents a collaboration between Dubai's sustainability programs and HaejooX, a leading Korean developer specializing in artificial reefs. The project’s inaugural phase involves the deployment of 1,000 reef modules—engineered structures designed to provide habitat for marine species and foster biodiversity—into Dubai’s waters. Over the next three years, this number will grow to 20,000, creating one of the world’s largest marine reef systems.

Spanning an area of 600 square kilometers, Dubai Reef is set to exceed 400,000 cubic meters in volume, making it a landmark project in marine conservation.

Beyond its ecological benefits, the Dubai Reef initiative is poised to leave a lasting legacy in marine conservation and environmental education. By fostering a thriving underwater ecosystem, the project aims to attract eco-tourists and researchers from around the globe, highlighting Dubai’s role as a pioneer in sustainable development.
