First Submarine Cable Linking Saudi Arabia & Egypt to Be Built

A cooperation agreement has been signed between Mobily and Telecom Egypt to establish the first submarine cable connecting Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

The new submarine cable, which is wholly owned by Mobily, will run through the Red Sea, linking the two nations and allowing for potential future expansion to Europe. This initiative is set to enhance Mobily’s existing network of submarine cable systems and bolster its international infrastructure, thereby providing more reliable communications to meet the increasing demand for internet services.

The cable will feature two landing stations: one in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, and the other in Duba, Saudi Arabia. This setup will facilitate connectivity between the Arabian Gulf and neighbouring regions to the Egyptian station via Mobily’s digital corridors, while also offering links to other underwater cable systems. The agreement aligns with Mobily's strategic objectives to expand its infrastructure and enhance its international capabilities by building on its existing submarine cable investments.

Furthermore, this new cable is expected to reinforce Saudi Arabia’s status as a key international telecommunications hub, in line with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 goals. Telecom Egypt plans to develop new transit routes from the Sharm El-Sheikh station to the Mediterranean Sea, thereby increasing the geographical diversity of the submarine cable network to address the growing demands for connectivity.
