Ministry of Antiquities & USAID Unveil Renovations in Historic Cairo

A joint project between the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and USAID has inaugurated nine recently-restored heritage sites across Islamic Cairo, including the 18th-century Sabil Kuttab of Ruqayya Dudu and the 14th-century Gate of Manjak al-Silahdar.

Egyptian and US officials convened at the Bimaristan al-Mu’ayyad al-Shaykh in the heart of Islamic Cairo, which the project has restored to its original 15th-century glory. The event was attended by the Egyptian Minister of Culture, the Deputy Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, and the US Ambassador.

“IMCT is a new achievement in our long history of cooperation with USAID,” Ms. Yomna El Bahhar, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, says. “The project aligns with global trends towards experiential and authentic tourism. It focuses on Historic Cairo and Luxor and establishes a more sustainable approach to managing cultural tourism sites, enhancing Egypt’s strategic position for the future.”

Over the past four years, the Integrated Management of Cultural Tourism (IMCT) project has been working on rehabilitating cultural heritage sites throughout Egypt. The project emphasizes sustainable tourism that prioritizes local communities. By balancing site restoration with the preservation of the urban fabric of historic destinations, IMCT aims to generate economic benefits for local communities and foster sector growth and prosperity.
