As the Egyptian government continues to implement green policies in the lead-up to the COP27 UN Climate Change Conference in Sharm El Sheikh, a law has recently been ratified by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to penalise the dumping of waste into any Egyptian water. Anyone who dumps hazardous material into the Nile, the seas or even a small lake will face a fine between EGP 100,000 and EGP 500,000, and jail time between one and three years. The penalty may be doubled in the event of repeat offences.
Recently, the Cairo governorate has implemented a new rule that would punish anyone who tosses their trash from their cars with a suspension of their driver’s licence and a hefty fine.
