Riyadh is First Middle East City to Get Global Active City Status
The certification is granted by the Active Well-being Initiative and supported by the International Olympic Committee.
Riyadh has become the first city in the Middle East to receive Global Active City certification, an international designation recognising cities that actively promote healthy lifestyles, physical activity and wellbeing.
The certification is granted by the Active Well-being Initiative and supported by the International Olympic Committee. According to the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, the recognition reflects sustained, multi-year efforts to improve quality of life across the capital through urban planning, infrastructure and community programmes.
These efforts include the expansion of public parks and open spaces, the development of sports and fitness facilities, and the creation of active transport routes designed to encourage walking, cycling and everyday physical activity. The commission said the designation reflects the application of international standards in health, activity and urban development.
The Royal Commission credited collaboration with national partners, including the Ministry of Sport and the Saudi Sports for All Federation, in securing the certification. The designation was also framed as aligning with Saudi Vision 2030 objectives, particularly those related to quality of life, sustainability and human-centred city planning.
