Saudi Arabia Achieves Self-Sufficiency in Fig Production

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has announced that the kingdom achieved self-sufficiency in fig production. The kingdom now boasts an annual output of 28,000 tonnes of figs, with the biggest producing regions being Riyadh and Jazan.

The fig production season runs from February to November, with the most popular types of figs being the Madani, Turkish, Waziri, Kadota and White King varieties.

The ministry is aiming to support the local fruit production industry, and in particular the fig production industry, by developing the production, processing, and marketing of figs through the Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program. The initiative so far has seen farmers across the kingdom plant up to 1,200 fig trees in two years.
