Sharjah Unveils Independence Square on 54th Eid Al Etihad
Sharjah also upgraded roads and lighting around the square renovated 24 surrounding buildings and unified 95 commercial signboards and reopened the restored Imam Al Nawawi Mosque in Fatimid style.
Sharjah marked Eid Al Etihad with the inauguration of Independence Square, featuring a newly erected 34-metre Independence Monument topped with a seven-pointed star symbolising the seven emirates. The unveiling was carried out by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. The monument’s four sides feature plaques commemorating key chapters in the UAE’s history — from the federation’s formation on December 2nd, 1971, to earlier periods of British influence, historical civil-air station developments, and the eventual end of the British military presence. Beyond the monument itself, the redevelopment of the square encompasses landscaped green areas, pedestrian walkways, contemporary lighting, and aesthetic upgrades to 24 surrounding buildings. Façades have been restored with a unified architectural finish, 95 commercial signboards replaced for cohesion, and upgraded infrastructure including pavements, roads, parking and lighting columns to improve safety and urban flow. The initiative also included the reopening of the restored Imam Al-Nawawi Mosque, originally built in 1995. Renovations followed Fatimid architectural style and included raised minarets and walls, an external arcade, and upgraded facilities — part of a broader directive to preserve religious sites and reinforce cultural heritage in the emirate.
