Supreme Media Council to Block Unlicensed Digital Media Platforms
Unlicensed platforms have three months to acquire proper licences, before being blocked and having revenue streams cut.
Unlicensed digital and satellite media platforms which fail to obtain the proper operating licences within the next three months will be blocked by the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA). This decision was announced in a statement issued by the Supreme Council for Media Regulation, reiterating the importance of these platforms adhering to proper regulations.
As well as having the media channels blocked, bank transfers to accounts belonging to organisations that fail to obtain licences will be stopped by the Central Bank, in an attempt to curb illegal, unregulated media streams from gaining traction in the country’s media ecosystem.
The statement also cited that the Supreme Council for Media Regulation recently intervened in removing content from Amazon Prime Video which “did not match the religious values of the Egyptian and Arab communities.” The unspecified content was removed within 24 hours of notice being given to Amazon by the Council.
