Taj Hotels to Operate Cairo’s Historic Continental Hotel
India’s Taj Hotels will manage the revival of Cairo’s 19th-century Continental Hotel as a five-star property at Opera Square.
India’s Taj Hotels will enter the Egyptian market through an agreement to manage and operate Cairo’s historic Continental Hotel, reviving the 19th-century landmark as a five-star property in the heart of Khedivial Cairo.
The contract was signed at government headquarters in New Cairo City between Egyptian General Company for Tourism and Hotels and Indian Hotels Company Limited, which owns the Taj brand and operates as part of the Tata Group.
The signing was witnessed by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, who described the project as a successful model for partnership between the state and the global private sector, aligning with efforts to preserve architectural heritage while investing in it sustainably to support tourism and job creation.
Located in Opera Square overlooking the Azbakia Gardens, the Continental Hotel dates back to 1870.
Under the redevelopment plan, it will be transformed into a five-star hotel with around 300 rooms. The property is owned by the Egyptian General Company for Tourism and Hotels, a subsidiary of the Holding Company for Tourism and Hotels under the Ministry of Public Business Sector.
The ministry’s wider strategy focuses on maximising returns from state-owned assets through partnerships with experienced international operators, particularly in luxury heritage hospitality. The Taj brand currently manages more than 335 hotels across over 150 locations worldwide.
