UAE’s First Methanol Plant to Be Built in Abu Dhabi’s Ta’ziz Hub
Located in Al Ruwais, the plant will have a production capacity of 1.8 million tonnes annually.
Ta’ziz, the industrial hub in Abu Dhabi, has awarded a AED 6.2 billion contract to Samsung E&A for the construction of the UAE's first methanol plant.
Set to be built in Al Ruwais Industrial City, the plant is expected to have a production capacity of 1.8 million tonnes per year, making it one of the largest methanol facilities in the world. The plant will also produce a range of chemicals, including methanol derivatives, to help grow the country’s chemical industry.
The contract follows a November 2024 announcement of over USD 2 billion in investments to build the necessary infrastructure at the Ta’ziz complex, including utilities and a chemicals terminal.
Methanol, recognised as a potential transition fuel, offers a cleaner alternative to traditional fuels like coal and diesel, particularly in power generation and marine transportation, where it can replace high sulphur fuels.
