USAID Funds Scholarships to Empower Egyptians to Fight Climate Change

On the sidelines of the COP27 UN Climate Change Conference in Sharm El Sheikh, the government of the United States announced its support for USAID Egyptian Pioneers, a new programme to provide scholarships and training to Egyptian students with a focus on sectors that will help push Egypt's climate goals forward.

The American University in Cairo will administer these USAID-funded scholarships and training alongside the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, connecting university programmes with private and public sector institutions, and ultimately strengthen Egypt's workforce.

These programmes will include scholarships for at least 700 young Egyptians from underserved communities to earn their undergraduate degrees, half of whom will be women, scholarships for 60 mid-career Egyptian government workers to obtain their Master's degree in the United States or in Egypt. The programmes will also provide scholarships for 50 mid-career government workers to pursue post-doctoral studies in the US, and technical training in the US and Egypt for at least 250 mid-career government workers and at least 200 mid-career professionals from the private sector.

Since 1978, USAID has contributed over USD 30 billion to support Egypt's infrastructure and development.
