USD 85.7 Million Bridges to Cut Traffic Delays by 80% in Abu Dhabi

Aiming to alleviate traffic congestion, the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) in Abu Dhabi has officially opened two new bridges connecting Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street with Shakhbout Bin Sultan Street, targeting a significant reduction in traffic delays. The AED 315 million project, designed to streamline the flow of vehicles and reduce morning peak congestion, is expected to cut intersection delays by 80%, improving daily commutes for thousands of residents.

The new infrastructure includes a three-lane flyover bridge on Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street and a two-lane bridge linking Shakhbout Bin Sultan Street to Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street. In addition to easing traffic, the development also features pedestrian and cycle paths, reflecting Abu Dhabi’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive transport solutions. The total length of the bridges spans 742 meters, with a surface area of over 10,000 square meters, and includes 61 streetlights for enhanced safety.

The bridges are set to serve an estimated 7,500 vehicles per hour, significantly improving access for commuters traveling to key destinations, including the city center, Zayed International Airport, Mussafah, and Hudayriyat Island.

With the completion of the project, morning peak delays are expected to be reduced to just 20 seconds, with plans for future upgrades, including an underpass, already in the works.
