The World Health Organization (WHO) celebrated its 75th anniversary at the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). Egypt has hosted the WHO Regional Office since 1949, and was presented a special WHO75 award of gratitude for its role in the WHO mission in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
As part of the event, a selection of children's artworks from various countries in the region was showcased, inspired by WHO75 and highlighting the organisation's commitment to engaging within communities. Attendees also had the opportunity to view a photo exhibition reflecting WHO's work, particularly in emergency settings.
A special session was convened on the topic of universal health coverage, providing insights into the 45-year journey of primary health care in the Eastern Mediterranean region and paying tribute to all WHO Regional Directors for the Eastern Mediterranean since 1949.
Egypt’s recent success in eliminating Hepatitis C earned the country the world’s first WHO gold tier certificate in October 2023, acknowledging efforts to eradicate the virus.
