Lebanon’s EAST Architecture Studio Wins Saudi’s First AlMusalla Prize
Scheduled for display at the 2025 Islamic Arts Biennale, the design honours sustainability, modularity and heritage.
The Diriyah Biennale Foundation has revealed the winners of the inaugural AlMusalla Prize, which has been awarded to Lebanon-based EAST Architecture Studio, in collaboration with artist Rayyane Tabet and engineering firm AKT II.
Following its display at the four-month-long Islamic Arts Biennale, taking place at Western Hajj Terminal at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the Musalla will be disassembled and relocated to a new site.
Inspired by regional weaving traditions, this innovative design incorporates a modular structure crafted from sustainable materials, including palm fronds and fibers sourced from local date palm waste. The adaptable prayer space welcomes visitors into its square-shaped layout, enveloping them in an earthy atmosphere infused with a sense of order and harmony.
Praised for its refined approach to merging craftsmanship with sustainability, the design employs a logic of repeating singular panel units to form the structure, evoking the image of a loom and revitalizing Jeddah's vernacular architecture, inspired by the historic AlBalad district. The modular design ensures easy assembly, disassembly, and relocation, offering versatility for various settings. It also evokes a sense of spirituality, fostered by the harmonious blend of materials and proportions, creating an atmosphere of peaceful reflection.
