Beit El Sabban and the Art of Reimagining Tradition

“Few celebrate Ramadan like Egypt, but Saudi Arabia comes a close second,” says Dina El Sabban, founder of The Mawlay Experience—the groundbreaking Ramadan dining concept that transforms exclusive historical Egyptian sites into one-time-only culinary spectacles. Now, El Sabban is bringing her expertise to Saudi Arabia with her latest venture: Beit El Sabban.

As the birthplace of Islam, Saudi Arabia’s cultural and religious Ramadan traditions run deep. Where better to introduce Mawlay’s fresh take than Diriyah, a historic town northwest of Riyadh? With 2025 designated as the Year of Handicrafts by the Ministry of Culture, the demand for heritage-driven experiences is growing. “There’s a push to preserve and present Saudi heritage,” El Sabban explains. And at its core, that’s precisely what Beit El Sabban is about—authenticity infused with contemporary innovation.

As a direct extension of The Mawlay Experience, Beit El Sabban carries forward the same dedication to storytelling and culinary artistry that set its predecessor apart. Yet, this new project stands entirely on its own. “That’s why we had to change the name,” El Sabban notes. To truly honor the distinct cultural traditions of Saudi Arabia—particularly in the Najdi region—Beit El Sabban had to be something completely new.

“Najdi culture is deeply valued in Saudi Arabia,” she explains. “It manifests in art, hospitality, and architecture—it defines the region.” El Sabban’s meticulous approach reflects this respect. Through extensive research and close collaboration with locals, she and her team have crafted an experience that is firmly rooted in Saudi heritage—while still carrying the contemporary flair that made The Mawlay Experience so groundbreaking.

Set within one of the oldest houses in the region, Beit El Sabban’s venue tells its own story. Unlike the gilded palaces of The Mawlay Experience, this space exudes understated elegance and authenticity. Partnering with Mandarin Oriental, Beit El Sabban offers a curated menu of “Saudi dishes with a twist.” Standout creations like Jareesh Risotto strike a delicate yet delicious balance between tradition and innovation. The menu also thoughtfully incorporates the ghabga meal—a distinctive Saudi practice that takes place between Iftar and Suhoor, setting it apart from Egyptian customs.

At Beit El Sabban, you don’t simply reserve a table—you claim a seat at a shared experience. Inspired by the intimate, communal meals El Sabban and her siblings would host, this dining experience is deeply personal—just like its name. Guests come together around a single table, embodying the spirit of lamma and honoring the tradition of togetherness at the heart of Ramadan.
