First Green Initiative Launched to Revolutionise Egyptian Tourism
The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Ministry of Environment have put their heads together to create a plan for a greener tourism sector, in anticipation of COP27 later this year.
In preparation for the COP27 United Nations Climate Change Conference, Egypt is moving forward quickly with its 2030 sustainable development goals.
The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Ministry of Environment have put their heads together to create a plan for a greener tourism sector. Thus, the “Towards a Greener Tourism Sector” project was born, powered by funding from the Global Environment Facility via a collaboration with the United Nation Development Program.
In short, the project has five main goals, firstly, the ministries aim to create a comprehensive guide for hotel and business owners in the tourism sector that will encompass all the “green” practices they need to follow.
Secondly, they created the Egyptian platform for sustainable tourism. This online platform is mainly geared towards hotel and business owners and has everything they need to know, at the touch of a mouse.
The ministries will also be launching another guide for restaurants and the service industry to follow. The two guides will prepare both parties for inspection and later for licensing by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
Furthermore, the ministries are launching the ‘Green List’ campaign, which will increase the tourists’ knowledge and awareness of Egypt’s green tourism and protected areas. The Green List will be made public on the Eco Egypt website and will include a guide to Egypt’s protectorates, eco-friendly alternatives in Egypt and eco-friendly practices to keep.
Finally, the ministries will be investing more money and time on Egypt’s protectorates, and will be encouraging investments in them.
