Meet the Viral Yo-yo Master Bringing the Classic Toy Back Into Egypt
Med student by day and yo-yo wizard by night, Amr Yasser is bringing yo-yo culture back into the spotlight.

Remember that yo-yo you have collecting dust in your drawer? While you’ve neglected to walk the dog, this Egyptian medical student has been perfecting his yo-yo wizardry with his viral videos. Amr Yasser, aka ‘Yo-yo by Amr’ on TikTok, is bringing the forgotten toy back to the spotlight with his throwdowns, sleepers, and cat-skinning ways.
“I’ve been practising since I was six years old, and felt like I wanted to bring the hands-on playful culture behind yo-yos back to Egypt,” Amr Yasser tells CairoScene. “So far people have been really interested to see and know more”.
After amassing millions of views, Yasser founded his own yo-yo store, ‘Yoyo Town’. Dubbing itself the first yo-yo shop in Egypt, Yoyo Town is an online platform on Instagram and Facebook that is giving us another chance to test out our ability to go ‘around the world’. Yasser also organises community meet-ups with yo-yo enthusiasts in Egypt, for anyone who wants to show off or learn more.
We caught up with Yasser as he demonstrated his yo-yo trickery, and gave us a peek at his most expensive yo-yo.
